The New Girl Animation

Finally we got to the end of our fifteen seconds of animation. It took a lot longer then I thought it would, but we finally got there though there’s alot of room for improvement. Unfortunately Laura hasn’t yet finished her fifteen seconds due to some problem’s she’s been facing. the animation was simply hand drawn, and coloured with pastels for a scribbled effect. But this is what we have so far.

Unfortunately we rushed the sound at the end of the project, as we didn’t realise how long everything would take, and by the time we were ready to make some sounds we hadn’t the time to do them properly, so did them in a rush.

one thing that really annoys me with my section is when the boy stands and walks away as she sits down. Something went wrong with his legs, and it looks as though he has some sort of limp, when I get the chance I will definitely try and improve this. Another thing i would like to make better, though with the time limit we had it might not be possible, was that somethings seemed to move a little too fast. I feel that there wasn’t enough reaction time for the characters.

Once the end of the animation is complete I’m excited to see it all together as a finished piece. Though it could be improved I feel that it slotted together better then i had expected, and seemed to make sense.

Run Dragon Run!!!

This was an animation i watched a little while ago, but with the work I’ve been getting done I completely forgot to put it on here, still no harm done I’ve remembered now!! It’s called Run Dragon Run! By Ricardo Biriba

I love how the 3D characters are put against what’s made to look like a drawn background. It really adds something special to it. The animation itself made me laugh and was well done. I can’t wait to find more from this animator.

Essay over….

Well I finally finished my essay last night…. whewww I think it’s ok, but normally when i think it’s good its turns out terrible, but I’m staying positive… it WILL be fine… I ended up not using Peter Foldes in my essay as finding anything decent about it was virtually impossible, but while I was looking for someone to replace him i found two animators who were really good that I included instead.

One of them was Bill Plympton his animation Your Face, was fun to watch, and really showed how far you can push what you do to your characters in animation:

I really liked his style of drawing, and felt he had an individual style of Dynamic Form.

The other animation was Crac by Frederic Back.

I really liked the soft colours and childish style of animation of Back, and thought it was a beautiful animation to watch.

I really liked these animators, and found both of the works and techniques interesting.

Supporting Studies: Angle Drawings

For this we had to draw the rough stick figure of the figure, and from there draw out the different angles of the pose and figure to help fit everything in the right place. I found these really good for practise and really enjoyed them.

After practising with stick figures we began to add form to the figures, and i felt some of the came out really well.

I really enjoyed doing these angle drawings, and I may try to use this sometimes in my drawings.

Supporting Studies: Difficult Exercises

For these exercise we had to do a series of things that made drawing difficult. The first we had to do was to look at the life model, and not look at the paper, so it wasn’t clear where the pencil was on the paper, this is the result:

I found these exercises difficult but fun to do.

After this we had to look at the pose for a couple of minutes and then draw the pose out from memory, on this image the one on the left was from memory, while the one on the right was not looking at the paper.

After this we had to use our opposite hand, for this it meant using my right hand. I found this really difficult at first but as i did more it became slightly easier, and i sort of liked the sketchy effect it created.

After this another model stood in front of us and we had to draw out the figure but draw it upside down on the paper. This I found really difficult to do. On the image the one of the left is me using my right hand again.

Supporting Studies: Charcoal Drawings

During this day we used charcoal instead of the usual pencil on paper in our sketch books. When we started we drew lines and were told to make them represent different emotions, like from happiness to anger, sadness to indifference. this is what i made.

After this we were told that in the next few images we could only use certain shapes, which were rectangles, circles, triangles, we then had to make a person, a dog, a monkey, a giraffe, and a pregnant woman.

After this we were told to create a simple sillohette character and had to draw them in the rain. For the first image it was supposed to be him not bothered about the rain, with his umbrella up, the second was supposed to be him fighting against the wind, the third was him loosing his umbrella and the last was of him crawling on the ground his umbrella lost. I enjoyed doing this as it was fun to show feelings without a face.

After this we had to do the same sort of thing, but the character had to be flushing away his dead fish. The first was of him throwing the fish and not really caring at all, the second was of him caring a little for it and missing it a little, the third was of him saying goodbye to the fish after really caring about it, the last picture was of him flushing the fish after thinking of the fish as a brother.

After lunch we came back and used a life model to represent the character in the rain, this is what i drew, they had to remain sillohettes.

After this we went on to do the same thing over the dead fish images, here are the sillohettes I drew.

I really enjoyed doing this and had fun creating emotion with just the stance of a character.

For these two images we had to work out where the center of gravity would be and then draw the figure from there, this helped as it made it easier to work out where the weight would be.

For these images we were given around a minute – 5 minutes to draw as much of the models as we could. I found this a good exercise to get me to draw faster, and though some of them aren’t finished i like the look that was created.

Supporting Studies: Outside Drawings

For this we were looking at space and depth, so we went outside and chose areas to scetch out, trying to get a feeling of depth into the images.

Out these two i prefer the second as i feel theres more depth to it, and it seems to attract my eye.

Supporting Studies: Close Up Drawings

For this we were given a piece of paper with rectangles drawn on it, and then with different models we had to choose close up sections of each model, this was something i enjoyed doing, and there were a few that i really did end up liking.

These are the close ups that i really liked.

The top and bottom on the right are the ones i really like, i like the angles and the details i have added in.

I really like the top one on the left i like how his hair covers his eyes.
